A Golden Retriever Story

I was a stray that the Humane Society in Oklahoma City picked up back in 2000. I was darn lonely, and was real tired. The Humane Society called the Dallas Fort Worth Metro Golden Retriever Rescue group and I was transported down to Texas.

A family adopted me, but they just left me in their backyard all day. Hey, I'm a young stud, and I like adventures, meeting people both big and small, and of course other dogs. Now I was no dummy so it didn't take me long to figure how to get out and visit in the neighbourhood.

Next thing I know these folks take me back to Rescue. Anyhow I'm sitting in the kennels waiting for someone to take me into my forever home, when one day this dude who went by the name of Fred came over and talked to the rescue folks. He described the type of Golden he was looking for, and said he even had a name for the dog - 'Jake'. Well my ears perked up right away (since that was my name), and the rescue folks introduced the two of us. Well it was long lost friends at first sight - hey, he even had a fuzzy face. Well, Fred adopted me and took me home. Pretty soon we were doing all sorts of cool things together. He rode a bike and let me run along beside him, although I did have to wear a leash. It took me a while to train Fred that when squirrels and rabbits were in sight, that he needed to pay attention and keep up. It only took a couple of crashes where Fred, bike, and I rolled over a few times, but he soon got the hang of it. In return I learned to obey him on sit, down, stay, heel (at least most of the time).

He taught me how to sail, and introduced me to my favourite sport, chasing a throw kong in the water. Fred and I play all the time at the lake and in the surf down on the Gulf. He even taught me how to crew for him when he races his car, and I ended up getting a great trophy at the Pittsburg Vintage Grand Prix back in 2002 - "Best Crew Dog". Is that cool or what?

Arf!
